Local Equities Market

For the week ended September 30, 2022, the local stock market as measured by the Combined Index increased week-over-week by 1.73%. The Main Market Index increased by 1.57%, the JSE Junior Market Index increased by 3.16%, and the JSE USD Equities Index increased by 6.38%. During the week, Barita Investments Limited was the largest gainer, rising 16.46% to close at $107.89. The biggest decliner was Cargo Handlers Limited, which fell by 15.69% to close at $11.55. Year-to-date (YTD), with the ongoing rebound in the local economy, small-cap stocks, reflecting those listed on the Junior Market Index have continued the strong performance seen in 2021, growing by 23.37%, outpacing its Main Market counterpart which is down 8.70% YTD. Overall, market activity resulted from trading in 64 stocks of which 38 advanced, 22 declined and 4 traded firm. Market volume amounted to 450,435,326 units valued at over $3,728,978,490.29.
