US News & Data:
US consumer spending rose 0.4% from a month earlier in November 2019, following a 0.3% gain in October and matching market expectations. Purchases of motor vehicles increased, as well as spending on healthcare. US personal income advanced 0.5% last month, following an increase of 0.1% in October and beating market expectations of 0.3%. There were increases in compensation of employees, farm proprietors’ income, and personal interest income. The US economy grew by an annualized 2.1% in Q3, unchanged from the second estimate and following a 2% expansion in the previous three-month period. The increase in real GDP in the third quarter reflected positive contributions from personal consumption expenditure, federal government spending, residential investment, exports, and state and local government spending that were partly offset by negative contributions from non-residential fixed investment and private inventory investment. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, increased.
European News & Data:
The consumer price inflation in the United Kingdom held steady at 1.5% year-on-year in November 2019, the lowest level since November 2016, but slightly above market expectations of 1.4%. The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee voted by a majority of 7-2 to hold Bank Rate at 0.75% during its December policy meeting, as policymakers took a wait-and-see approach following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s election victory and its possible implications on Brexit. Two members have voted for a second month in a row for a rate cut amid concerns about the job market. Britain’s gross domestic product expanded 1.1% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2019, compared to a market estimate of 1.0% and the previous period’s revised 1.2%.
G20 News & Data:
The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) left its benchmark 1-year Loan Prime Rate (LPR) unchanged at 4.15% on December 20th, 2019. The 5-year LPR, generally used for new mortgage loans, was also left on hold at 4.8%. The central bank last cut the two rates by 5bps each last month, aiming to reduce lending costs and boost a slowing economy. Since the one-year LPR became the official key rate in August 2019, it was already cut 3 times. The central bank says he pursues its monetary policy “neither too tight nor too loose” while maintaining market liquidity at a reasonably ample level but markets expect the PBoC to adopt an easier monetary policy stance in 2020 amid a slowing economy. Yet, the central bank has conducted two reverse repurchase agreements this month; the second biggest so far in 2019 was made the day before, with a CNY$280 billion pump.
The annual inflation rate in Canada rose to 2.2% in November 2019 from 1.9% in the previous month, matching market expectations. It was the highest inflation rate since May, driven by a rebound in energy prices, as cost of gasoline increased for the first time since October 2018.
Japan’s consumer price inflation rose to 0.5% year-on-year in November 2019 from 0.2% in the previous month and above market expectation of 0.2%. This was the highest rate in four months, as food and housing prices rose increased faster while transport deflation eased.
