Local Stock Market Review
For the week ended Friday, the majority of the Jamaica Stock Exchange indexes closed lower than the previous week. The JSE Junior Market Index declined 1.51%, the JSE Combined Index declined by 0.34%, the JSE Index decreased by 0.24%, the JSE All Jamaican Composite Index declined by 0.25% and the JSE USD Equities Index declined by 5.63%. The biggest winner this week was Victoria Mutual Investments Limited, rising by 23.85% to close at US$13.18. The biggest loser was ISP Finance Services Limited.falling by 25.08% to close at J$22.10.

US News & Data:
Sales of previously owned houses in the US increased 3.6% from the previous month to an annualized rate of US$5.54 million units in December 2019, above market expectations of a 1.3% rise. It is the highest level since February 2018.
European News & Data:
The number of people claiming for unemployment benefits in the UK increased by 14.9 thousand in December of 2019, the same as in November 2019 and below market expectations of 22.6 thousand. The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment for Germany climbed 16.0 points from December 2019 to 26.7 in January 2020, the highest since July 2015 and well above market expectations of 15.0. It is expected that the trade dispute’s negative effects on the German economy will be less pronounced than previously thought following the recent signing of the US-China Phase One agreement.
G20 News & Data:
The People’s Bank of China left its benchmark 1-year Loan Prime Rate (LPR) unchanged for the second consecutive month at 4.15% on January 20, 2020. The 5-year LPR, generally used for new mortgage loans, was also left on hold at 4.8%. The central bank injected fresh funds via its medium-term lending facility (MLF) loans into the banking system last week. Please note that on December 28, 2019, the central bank decided to start using the key loan prime rate (LPR) as a new benchmark for pricing outstanding floating-rate loans.
Japan’s consumer price inflation rose to 0.8% year-on-year in December 2019 from 0.5% in the previous month, above market expectations of 0.4%.
The annual inflation rate in Canada was at 2% in December 2019, unchanged from the previous month and matching market expectations. The Bank of Canada left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 1.75% on January 22, 2020, as widely expected. It remained the highest rate since December 2008. Policymakers said that they will be closely monitoring the economy to see if the recent slowdown in growth is more persistent than forecast.
