US News & Data:

The Federal Reserve (Fed) left the target range for its federal funds rate unchanged at 1.5-1.75% on January 29th 2020 as expected, saying the current stance of monetary policy is appropriate to support sustained expansion of economic activity, strong labor market conditions, and inflation returning to the 2% objective. The first monetary policy decision from the Fed in 2020 suggests that no changes in the funds rate should be expected during this year, in line with Federal Open Market Committee projections made in December 2020. The US economy grew 2.1% in Q4, the same as in Q3 and matching market expectations. Personal spending in the US rose 0.3% month-over-month in December of 2019, in line with market expectations, and mainly boosted by spending on health care.

European News & Data:

The Bank of England’s MPC voted by a majority of 7-2 to hold Bank Rate at 0.75% during its January 2020 meeting, with policymakers taking a wait-and-see approach as Britain prepares to leave the EU. The GfK consumer confidence in the United Kingdom rose 2 points to -9 in January 2020, climbing for the second consecutive month after reaching its lowest level since 2013 in October and November ahead of the election. The GfK consumer sentiment indicator for Germany unexpectedly rose to 9.9 heading into February 2020 from an upwardly revised 9.7 in the previous month and beating market expectations of 9.6. This was the highest reading since June 2019 on the back of preliminary trade deal between the US and China, with improvements being seen in economic and income expectations.

G20 News & Data:

The Official NBS Manufacturing PMI in China fell to 50.0 in January 2020 from 50.2 in the previous month and matching market estimates. It was the weakest reading since October, hitting the neutral mark that separates growth from contraction, as the survey was conducted before the coronavirus outbreak when the impact was not fully reflected.

The Consumer Confidence Index in Japan stood at 39.1 in January 2020, unchanged from the previous month’s seven-month high, but below market expectations of 40.8.

National Australia Bank’s index of business confidence dropped 2 points from the previous month to -2 in December 2019, the lowest level since July 2013 and below market expectations of 1.
